ATA APPOINTS NEW AMERICA’S ROAD TEAM
The American Trucking Associations named captains for its 2007-08 America’s Road Team: Albert Adams, William Burton, Wayne Crowder, Dennis Day, William Kent Durant, Steve Eckhoff, Steve Fields, Jose Franco, Clarence Jenkins Jr., Dellonzo “Mack” McAdory, Richard Scholl, Chris Serviss, Larry Shelton, Anthony Sifford, Tony Spero and Rick Whittle.

Nominees must be a company driver or a leased owner-operator with a fleet that is a full member of ATA. Duties include advocating safety to those within the industry at terminals and truck stops and testifying on trucking and safety issues before lawmakers.


SWIFT DRIVER WINS $1 MILLION
Swift Transportation driver Juan De La Paz of Chaparral, N.M., won $1 million as part of the carrier’s Thanks A Million II appreciation contest.

The award was announced at an NBA game between the Memphis Grizzlies and the Philadelphia 76ers in Tennessee.

The 28-year-old was one of 10 Swift drivers chosen in a drawing to make the trip to Memphis. The other nine drivers each received $10,000. This is the second time Swift had awarded a $1 million prize.

Each Swift driver is eligible to win based on safety and productivity vouchers earned for each 500 miles driven without a violation. Any driver with a violation in the past six months is ineligible. De La Paz earned 103 vouchers during the qualifying period. He is assigned to the El Paso, Texas, terminal.

Finalists were Jeffery Esperium, Gustavo Gilman, Michael Harmon, Stephen Hartley, Roger Holden, Aaron Jones, Jamison Lockamy, Paul Mondragon and James Moses.


RWI NOW PAYING PRACTICAL MILES
RWI Transportation has started basing its owner-operator pay on practical miles. Based in Wilder, Ky., RWI is a member of the Castellini Group, one of the largest distributors of fresh fruits and vegetables in the United States.

Averitt Express inducted the following drivers into its Over 20 Team: Gregory Bayens, Robert Carter, Gordon Davis, Barry Galloway, Gary Gowin, Randy Graham, Mark Holscher, John Honeycutt, Jimmy Jones, Anthony Lands, Mike Mader, Tommy McMurry, Steven Smith, Mike Sutton and Thomas Warmouth.
