A new rest area opened last month along I-77 in North Carolina, but with its opening came the closure of four other rest stops near the new one.

The new rest area in Iredell, just south of the Tomlin Mill Road interchange (exit 59) and north of Statesville, N.C., opened Feb. 1. It is the first rest area in North Carolina to be built in the median of an interstate, rather than on one side of the interstate or the other, giving drivers in both directions access.

The facility offers truckers 55 parking spaces, along with six restrooms, a vending and seating area and more.

Four areas along I-77 closed as a result of the new location’s opening – two at the Iredell/Yadkin county line and two north of Mooresville.
