Overdrive has been named a finalist for four Jesse H. Neal Awards, which recognize exemplary work in business journalism.
For continued in-depth coverage of the electronic logging device mandate, Overdrive‘s ELD Data Grab series from June and July 2019 was named a finalist in the Best Series category. The series explores how ELD vendors, fleets, brokerages and other third-parties use the wells of data produced by electronic logging devices, and the absence of any regulations around the data’s use.
In the Best Subject-Related Package category, Overdrive scored two finalists nominations for the “Cracks in the System” package, published in November, and the “California’s Independent Contractor Crisis” package from February.
Cracks in the System explored the failures — and limited successes — of U.S. DOT rules meant to protect drivers against harassment and coercion by fleets, brokers and other parties.
California’s Independent Contractor Crisis detailed how California’s push to reign in predatory leasing practices and employee misclassification have undermined the ability of owner-operator truckers to work in the state.
Both of those packages were authored by Overdrive Senior Editor Todd Dills, who was also named a finalist for the Jesse H. Neal Award for Best Range of Work by a Single Author.
Dills has won the Best Range of Work award four other years — 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2019.
