Pride & Polish Working Combo, 2015 & Older: ‘The Goose’ sports nice nest for owners

Daniel and Phyllis Snow’s 1996 Freightliner Classic XL, “The Goose,” has been a work-in progress since they bought it 15 years ago. The truck got its name after the Snows’ son, Jayme, drove his own rig through a flock of ducks, eventually leading to his truck being named “The Duck.” Daniel was on his farm one day and saw a goose with a bunch of ducks around a pond, giving him the idea to name his truck “The Goose.”

“It was just a plain-Jane no-frills truck, but it was in good mechanical condition,” Daniel said about buying “The Goose” in 2005. “Over the years, we have built it into what it is now, just a piece at a time.” The couple is still working on the truck, which now features an impressive custom 140-inch sleeper.

Other than the paint and stretching the frame, the Harrison, Arkansas-based husband-wife team did most of the cosmetic work themselves, including renovating the sleeper. They bought the 140-inch sleeper in 2011 at a salvage yard and had it installed completely gutted.

They have a shop room on the front of their 2006 Utility 4000DX dry van, which they used for storage while they worked on the sleeper. Daniel said they would buy materials when they could afford them and work on the truck during downtimes.

When their hood was damaged and they bought a new one from Jones Performance, they found the color they wanted to replace the exterior teal, Dark Jade Medium Metallic from DuPont. The truck ran about 15 months with the teal cab before having it painted to match the hood.

Daniel said they used to upgrade trucks every few years. Phyllis said that as emissions requirements kept getting more strict, they decided to keep “The Goose” as their “home away from home.”

The Snow’s truck also placed second in the Interior category in the 2020 Pride & Polish contest.
