Progressive Commercial Insurance, in an effort to help owner-operators get ahead of the looming electronic logging device mandate, is offering its customers free ELDs for as long as the driver keeps Progressive as his or her insurance provider.

The company launched its Smart Haul ELD program at the Mid-America Trucking Show in Louisville, Ky., this week. Brett Stalnaker, product manager for Progressive, said the company will give its insurance customers a free ELD and pay the monthly service fee for as long as the driver is with Progressive.

Progressive has partnered with Rand McNally to offer drivers either the DC 200 or the ELD 50 as part of the program.

Progressive will collect the data from its ELDs, but Stalnaker said all of the data will be anonymous and that it would mainly be used to analyze lanes and speed data. Stalnaker added, however, that Progressive wouldn’t adjust a driver’s rates based on any of the data collected.

“We want to give the best drivers with the most experience the best rates,” he said. “I don’t know exactly how we’ll use the data, but we have a partnership with our drivers, and they trust us, so we don’t want to do anything to jeopardize that.”

Stalnaker said he hopes drivers will begin taking advantage of the Smart Haul program in advance of the Dec. 18 compliance date for the ELD mandate to give the drivers an opportunity to test out the devices and get used to them while still being able to keep paper logs.fAdditionally, Progressive is giving truckers a chance to win a four day, four night, expenses paid trip for four to Brush Creek Ranch in Saratoga, Wyo., with its Rig to Ranch Sweepstakes. The grand prize for the contest includes hotel, airfare and meals for four, a choice of family activities, as well as a $1,500 gift card. The promotion ends May 1.
