Per-mile spot market rates for all three segments — reefer, dry van and flatbed — fell in October, sticking with trends of 2012 and 2011, according to Internet Truckstop’s monthly rate data, released this week.

Rates in all three segments, though, are each about a dime higher than the same month in 2012, according to IT’s data.

Flatbed rates — by far the least volatile of the three — fell just a penny to $2.07 and have now been above the $2 since March of this year after 6 months of hovering around the $1.95 mark. Flatbed rates last month were 12 cents higher than the same month in 2012. Flatbed has now dropped three consecutive months after seeing no change from June to July.

Dry van rates fell 4 cents to $1.88, up 8 cents from October 2012. The per-mile dry van rate has now dropped four months in a row, following reaching an Internet Truckstop all-time high in June 2013.

October 2013 rates:

Flatbed: $2.07

Reefer: $2.17

Dry van: $1.88

Reefer rates fell 14 cents from September to $2.17 — 10 cents higher than the same month last year. Reefer was the only segment to see a rate gain in September, moving up a penny.

Typically, all three segments see rate boosts in November, especially dry van and reefer, as retailers prepare for the holiday shopping season.

This graph shows rate trends since January 2011, per Internet Truckstop data:
