Photos: Show trucks ready for competition

Johnny Byers gets the best of both worlds.

He gets to drive some for L.L. Carter & Son, Ruther Glen, Va., delivering pipe and other construction materials locally. He also gets to work in the shop — and that includes beautifying a stunning 1988 Freightliner FLC, with a few others at the shop helping out.

The rig is one of dozens competing in the Paul K. Young Memorial Truck Beauty Championship at the Mid-America Trucking Show. In last year’s competition here, the FLC won third place in its category, Working Bobtail.

How will Byers fare this year? “I don’t know,” he said. “There’s a lot of competition.”

The show trucks are behind the center’s West Wing.
