Highway fatalities dipped slightly in 2017, preliminary numbers show
National Safety Council numbers do not include specific crash data, such as how many of the highway deaths were as a result of a truck-involved accident. In sum, 40,100 deaths occurred last year, according to the NSC.

The National Safety Council also estimates the annual mileage death rate for 2016 was 1.25 deaths per 100 million vehicle miles traveled, a 3 percent increase over 2015.
