Nearly 2,000 Kenworth and Peterbilt tractors are being recalled due to an issue with certain transmissions displaying the wrong gear on the instrument panel.

According to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration documents, Paccar is recalling approximately 1,938 model year 2017-2018 Kenworth T680 and T880 and Peterbilt 567 and 579 trucks.

Affected tractors are equipped with an automated Eaton UltraShift Plus or Eaton Advantage Transmission with right hand stalk shifter. Paccar says the transmissions display either “D” for drive, “N” for neutral and “R” for reverse, along with the actual gear the transmission is in. In the affected trucks, the display on the instrument panel can indicate “N” when the shifter is set into “D” or “R,” causing the truck not to move.

Paccar will notify truck owners beginning April 2, and dealers will install a transmission software update for free. Truck owners can contact Kenworth customer service at 1-425-828-5000 with recall number 18KWA or Peterbilt customer service at 1-940-591-4000 with recall number 118-A. NHTSA’s recall number is 18V-092.

Earlier this year, Paccar recalled approximately 1,200 Kenworth and Peterbilt tractors with different transmissions that would allow the trucks to crank while in gear.
