The 1910 Avery farm truck’s centennial will be honored at 2:30 p.m. July 9 at the Iowa 80 Trucking Museum. The so-called birthday party for the truck coincides with the Walcott Truckers Jamboree that weekend in Walcott, Iowa.
The Avery is the oldest truck on display at the trucking museum, said its curator Dave Meier. The farm tractor was advertised to do the work of six to eight horses at a top speed of 15 miles per hour and retailed at $2,500 by its maker, Avery, a farm equipment manufacturer based in Peoria, Ill., in the 1920s.
Meier says that only six Avery trucks are known to still exist. In 1995, the museum purchased the Avery on display from Lloyd VanHorn. He had purchased it from the Murdo, S.D., Pioneer Auto Museum, Meier says.
