On Jan. 23, 2013, Mario Gonzalez was in stopped traffic on I-90 in Ohio due to accidents on the icy road.

He told his wife, who was riding with him, that the conditions were ripe for a rear-end collision since someone traveling too fast might not see the stalled traffic until too late.

Five minutes later, he looked in his rear view mirror and knew he had to take action.

Hear Gonzalez recount what happened in this illustrated version of the event, for which he was named a Highway Angel by the Truckload Carriers Association.
