A trucking ambassador: Interviewing ‘Truck Stop Missouri’ star Joe Bechtold

| October 05, 2011

Any particularly memorable moments for you from the filming that include your driver customers?
There was a father-son team with an amazing Peterbilt, and they brought it in and swung in during a car show — they just happened to be coming through, and they were a really unique family, from the East Coast. They were a unique pair, had a really interesting family dynamic. But really, nothing that stands out more than another moment, just a lot of really great guys.

What’s your sense of the driver community’s awareness of the show now that it’s been going for a good while?
I think it’s still so new that the entire trucking community doesn’t know about it. We get people coming in – and this has happened many times – their wives tell them they’ve “got to swing by that truckstop in Missouri.” They know where their husbands’ routes are.

And then folks come in and try to get in a picture with me. That’s been pretty interesting. I think the word’s getting out there and we’re getting more and more well-known.

Sorry Guys, I’ve watched quite a few episodes of the show and was very disappointed with what was being done and how the trucking industry was being portrayed. I guess I should say, the Lack of the true trucking industry and truck stops being portrayed. I found this more of a circus atmosphere. I mean, just a few examples….people taking a pig into one of their motel rooms and bathing it in the tub, people sitting on bleachers all day waiting for a cow to take a dump on a particular number, an elderly lady getting a tatoo, come on Leftfield Pictures and Mr. Bechtold, if you want to do a reality show on the trucking industry and the real lifestyle of the American Trucker be realistic about it. I have talked with many of my fellow drivers about this show and so far have not found one that feels what they are showing the public has anything to do with the reality of our industry. I personally feel that a much better job could have been done with this show.

Thanks for the thoughts, Bandit. Most drivers I’ve talked to have been either indifferent to it or hadn’t heard much of it as yet. Drivers do seem to be a lesser part of it all than local goings-on. What do others think?

Joe … You are a GREAT Manager; and I appreciate watching your show on mt GAC channel, I am sure this an older show (yes just confirmed it, 08/03/2011). I will tell you, the manager at The Antique Mall just pissed the hell outta me. There was NO reason to treat that older gentleman with the Fishing Pole so rudely. If he didn’t agree with him, fine, but don’t play a “dirty trick” on him by having him fish in a “Sump Pond”. Disgusting! That YOUNG Man needs to learn some manners and how to politely disagree with an older man.
