Pet story: My blue macaw

The following is a firsthand story from team trucker Tara Gillaspie, submitted in response to our December cover story on trucker pets. I also own a blue and gold macaw who rides with my husband Billy and me as we go down the road with are freight. (Read about another macaw-carrying trucker, as well as other drivers and their pets, in our December cover story.) She is a little over a year old, and she has ...

Biking Minneapolis

This week I enjoyed the Midtown Greenway in Minneapolis, Minn. I rode my bicycle from Hopkins, Minn., to the Freewheel Bike Center in downtown Minneapolis. Minneapolis is a bike friendly big city. Trails are interwoven throughout the metro area. Many of the streets have designated bike lanes. The midtown Greenway section is a must. For truckers all rides begin with finding a place to park. On this day I had a delivery at Super Valu in ...

Belgium, Wis.

This is the trail that got me thinking about putting together a guide of trucker friendly trails. I have been stopping at the How Dea Truck Stop for more than 20 years. I had even run east about 3 miles to a state park along Lake Michigan. Then one day I was eating a large, unhealthy breakfast when I spotted truckin’ runner Steve Fiel doing the same thing. So, I suggested a post breakfast walk ...

Wolf River Rail Trail

The Wolf River Rail Trail is easily accessible for a trucker. Access it in Brookville, Ohio, exit 21 on I-70. The easiest way to access it is to go south off of the exit. Wendy’s, Arby’s and McDonald’s all have truck parking. From there head south on Arlington Avenue for about a quarter mile, and the trail crosses the road. The trail itself is 13 miles long with a blacktop surface. On Saturday I took the ...

Constitution Trail

The Constitution Trail is less than 250 yards from Pilot Truck Stop in Bloomington, Ill. Just head out the back drive (across from the blue beacon) and turn left. You will see grain towers and a cemetery. The trail is across Washington Street and runs in front of the cemetery. If you want an uninterrupted run or ride turn right on the trail. The trail ends about 2.5 miles from where you started. Long enough ...

Favorite Trail

The Des Plaines River Greenway is a great trail. The trail itself is 31 miles long, but it connects with other local trails giving it hundreds of accessible miles off the main corridor trail. It is surrounded by more than 3,000 acres of forest preserve property. It is easily accessible by truck. It is located in northern Illinois, just east of U.S. 41 near the Wisconsin line. For us truckers the first question is: Where can ...

Working the Plan

Some of us can just eat properly and get their exercise as a daily routine. That’s not me. I need a well-defined goal and a plan for how to achieve it. My long-term goal is to finish a marathon at the age of  70. That is a little more than 18 years away and does not help me focus for today or this week. Goals more than 3 months away, except for a marathon, just ...

Bionic workout?

Those of you old enough to remember the heyday of spandex, neon and leg warmers probably can remember the semi-racy Jane Fonda workout videos of the 80s. Fonda was pretty much at the forefront of the video workout revolution, eventually leading to thousands of do-it-at-home workouts that you could perform in front of your own TV. Well, more than a quarter century later, and Fonda is not quite as young as she used ...

Mountain Biking

A few months ago I went for a ride in Green Bay while waiting for a load. I was following a paved trail and it was a nice ride. The next leg of the trail was closed and under construction. The trail ran alongside a wooded area. A path led into the wooded area. My bike is a hybrid, so what the heck? I took the path. Wow, a nice ride evolved into a great ride. ...
