The same year that a renegade truck owner-operator hauled a load of Coors beer to Georgia for the benefit of moviegoers in iSmokey amp; the Bandit, the AFL-CIO, joined by the Teamsters union, launched its 1977 boycott of Coors beer, citing antiunion practices. Joining that boycott at the behest of then San Francisco Teamsters local president Allan Baird was none other than Harvey Milk, the first openly gay elected official in the U.S. Milk and co.’s successful banishment of Coors from most gay bars in San Francisco’s Castro neighborhood is depicted in a recent film as an early political success. The film, which bears the politician’s last name, was released late last year by Focus Features.
