Big jump in diesel prices

The national average retail price of a gallon of diesel soared this week, increasing 6.5 cents to $2.797, according to the Department of Energy.

Over the past two weeks, the U.S. average price has risen 7.1 cents.

Prices in all regions surged more than 5 cents a gallon except for the Rocky Mountain area, where the average price gained 1.8 cents. All East Coast regions reported increases of more than 7 cents a gallon.

The cheapest diesel is in the Rocky Mountain region at $2.746, while California continues as the most expensive area for fuel at $2.959.
