Bismarck bars smoking in truck stops

Bismarck residents have voted to extend North Dakota’s smoking ban to truck stops, bars and tobacco stores.

The state already prohibited indoor smoking in businesses and public places, but had allowed exemptions for certain business categories. In an April 19 special election, residents voted to apply the ban to those exempt categories.

Residents voted against a proposal to permit smoking huts outside of bars to shield smokers in the winter.

Bismarck City Commission began the ban April 27.
