Board says FMCSA should gather driver employment history, give to carriers

| February 04, 2013

In what would essentially be another hurdle for drivers looking at finding a new driving job, the National Transportation Safety Board has recommended to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration that it gather and record all commercial driving-related employment history information about all drivers with a CDL and make that information available to carriers.

As part of the conclusion to a year and a half long investigation into a fatal truck accident, the National Transportation Safety Board has issued recommendations to nearly 10 groups, including FMCSA and other trucking-related administrations or organizations, regarding measures they can take to improve safety.

The accident in question occurred June 24, 2011 in Miriam, Nev.,at a railroad crossing on U.S. Highway 95. A truck pulling empty side-dump trailers hit an Amtrak passenger train, killing four passengers, the train conductor and the truck driver.

The NTSB began the report then and says it adopted the findings in December 2012.

Along with gathering employment history and giving it to carriers, the NTSB also recommends that FMCSA require carriers to “conduct and document investigations into employment records of prospective drivers for the 10 years that precede the application date” and retrieve records from the driver register.

NTBS cites the accident as an example — along with three other accidents — in which an employer did not make “an informed hiring decision” because it did not have accurate history dating back 10 years and the “commercial driver’s employment and license history was at issue,” says NTBS.

FMCSA has not yet responded to the recommendations. NTSB asked that the agency respond within 90 days.

I’d like a fulll historry on who these people hang out with such as the names and addresses of the ceo’s of the large trucking companies.

  • Kwikstep

How about this… Just create a huge database and turn the whole thing into a system by which the government does the actual hiring and rejects those they don’t like. That will bring us a lot closer to the totalitarian state desired by those currently in power.

  • Graybeard

I’m glad I got out of trucking when I did. Between the insurance companies and the government it’s just not worth it any more.

  • Jackie

I can’t believe that you guys are going to let them get away with this one either,it’s ok your not truckers anymore your just a bunch of sheep, now say BAAAAAAAAAA and this is just another scam for them dam onboard computers,I am really starting to think someone has some heavy money invested in them at the NTSB YA think! They cant ship these jobs out of the country,so they import, the foreign driver, and they don’t give a chit, they wreck ant ruck or kill someone their out of here of course your companies don’t care either because you know what their motive is,you guys really need to organize, and you won’t have to worry about your retirement disappearing either, the government still wants to get a hold of that teamster retirements sorry republicans it isn’t going to happen,I am keeping mine, quit bitching anDO SOMETHING quit getting screwed,I am retired and enjoying it! Time to go clean the pool

Im glad I retired last year,They expect drivers to jump through all the hoops, stay away from home for what? $30000.00-$35000.00 per year,What about the Mexican drivers comming across our southern border, do they have 10 years history on them???? I dont think so!!! and the companies cry about a driver shortage,When they start paying drivers a decent wage and the government gets off the drivers backs there will be a good driver shortage…off corse thats probably what big business wants, that way they can hire the Mexican drivers for fifteen cents a mile and increase there profits even more. They all lie about there profits and freight rates.

  • jackie

Are you kidding,as long as everyone is out their, just running their mouths nothing will ever be done, organize, truckers had a chance to do this in the late 70s and didn’t do it, and now their all dead or broke,I watch that strike, and everyone said I’ll never organize, I ws just starting out and I thought back then what the hell did I get into! Glad I listen, o yes never fall for a 401 K either another scam,

Don’t worry technology is out their today to replace your ass, couldn’t believe it when I saw it, but your ass is going to be replaced by a machine some day to,so companies really won’t have to listen to our problems,it may not happen in my life time, but the technology is their! I was raised in a simpler time ,and thankful for it now, but at the time we looked for something easier and now that it’s here I wanna go back! i remember listening to Dick Tracy and watching him on TV with his hi-tech walkie-talkie watch (HUM) we have that now,and can watch TV to on our phones, Don’t worry your going to be replaced

  • dewtruck

I am a life member of OOIDA and I urge you all to join. They are your best life line to The idiots in Wash.DC. The best money you could spend in joining any organization.

  • Jackie

OOIDA is tangled up in BS to,they sound great, but read the other post, technology is now up and running so fast that the driver will soon be a thing of the past, I am retired now,and really shouldn’t care, but I still do,I remember the time when drivers were walking away and not helping the younger kids,I am not walking away just because I have mine,I still care, remember this talking doesn’t work,ya I remember Dr.Martin Luther King, talking didn’t work, and someone is going to have to be sacrificed, drivers have to organize and shut it down while you still can , all this BS that NTSB and the DOT is wrong ! Your problems are so deep that it can’t be fixed you need people that have really done the job, Someone that is the King of the DOT not a politician, someone that isn’t in it for the money!!! If you shut the country down, get rid of the foreigners, close the borders, and the Government just might say oops their pissed, the drivers are the ones getting screwed, your going to develop health problems, stress at home can’t sleep, ETC ETC. and companies don’t care just move the freight,so just like everything else now a days it’s all wrong,

  • Bruce Kolinski

It’ time for truckers to demand that FMCSA back off their Comintern viewpoint. It’s time for FMCSA employees to start putting their little pinko names on a list for us to see where and how they’ve been conditioned by Globalist think tanks to control the independence of truckers. The Globalists are scared to death of truckers because of the economic power truckers could wield if they organized and chose to wield it. No other profession on this planet puts up with invasive garbage like this including the President of the United States. We don’t even know for sure where this socialist was born or what kind of grades he got in school. Stand up and say NO!

  • Andrea Sitler

This may be a positive thing if it did not turn into another DAC or PSP ordeal. It should be done by an impartial, outside agency. One who does background checks and employment checks for hire like many big companies use for their executive hires. Gov. run – no way!

Line up folks you can have a slice of bread as long as it lasts. Oh by the way, we have some brown shirts we would like you to wear.

  • martymarsh

I would not deny that ooida has done some good, I’ve watched them over the years and with their member ship they could have organized a strike along time ago. But we know they are afraid of being sued. Not everything can be accomplished in a court room and sooner or later something has to give, and when everyone gets tired enough it will. Now if you have a guarantee for that 25 bucks I will send it, other wise I will keep bitching.

  • martymarsh

Why are things getting worse then?

  • http://log18.us/ Mike Tayon

I won’t be replaced, not at all! I’m 50, won’t see it in my life either :)

This is just another “CMA(cover my ass) trick. They already have all the info they need.DAC,PSP and others that companies check with, have everything on you from day one.I ordered my history, got an envelope about 2.5 invches thick.Everything and anything they want about my driving history.
They screwed up.This driver should have never been driving. Now they want it to look like someone else mucked up.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1482395402 Rich Charles

    they already have it,,,DAC

  • martymarsh

This just proves that the NTSB is nothing but a bunch of government idiots.
