Charts: For-hire truck driver pay averages $46k, private $73k

How does your pay rank against the industry average?

These charts below, released this month by the American Trucking Associations as part of its annual Driver Compensation Study, should give you some idea.

The survey includes 125 fleets and 135,000 drivers, placing the results into four categories: Private fleet (van and non-van), truckload, less-than-truckload and drayage.

Two key points of note from the graphs ATA pointed when introducing them: Median age for the driver population remains well above the U.S. average of 42, and average pay in the for-hire industry (national, irregular route van drivers) was just two-thirds of that of private fleet drivers.
