A trucker’s dry van becomes an impromptu bomb shelter for a group of strangers on a lonely country road in the low-budget 1962 Cold War thriller This Is Not a Test, now a $5.95 DVD from www.oldies.com. As in the TV series 24, events in the 73-minute movie unfold in real time from the initial alert, yet the fast-working trucker still manages to seduce a just-met married woman while waiting for the missiles to fall.
Her talents add up
Esquire recently profiled biologist Franziska Michor, who hopes to help cancer patients through applied mathematics. She’s also licensed to drive 18-wheelers in her native Austria, just like her sister, a theoretical physicist. Their mathematician dad believed every young woman should learn cake baking, ballroom dancing and truck driving. One letter writer responded: “Michor is what every adult male is searching for: beautiful, intelligent, and the driver of a big rig.”
