FMCSA hearings planned

This year, the Senate has upcoming hearings on several areas under the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s jurisdiction, including hours of service, electronic on-board recorders and household movers.

The Commerce, Science, and Transportation committee or a subcommittee will host these hearings as part of the FMCSA reauthorization process, for oversight purposes, or for both. As part of the FMCSA reauthorization process, a subcommittee heard “Oversight of Motor Carrier Safety Efforts” April 28. Dates for the hearings have not been announced, a Senate aide said.

Congress last reauthorized the agency in the Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient Transportation Equity Act of 2005. Congress passed a bill in March to extend transportation funding through Dec. 31.

The FMCSA reauthorization traditionally moves with the overall surface transportation reauthorization. It is likely it would be melded with an overall committee surface reauthorization package.
