Freight rises to 3-year high

The amount of freight carried by the for-hire transportation industry rose 0.4 percent in August from July and 4.6 percent from a year earlier, reaching the highest level since July 2008, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics said Oct. 13.

BTS reported the level of freight shipments, measured by the Freight Transportation Services Index, rose 2.9 percent in the last three months to the new level.

The Freight TSI measures the month-to-month changes in freight shipments in ton-miles, which are then combined into one index.

For the first eight months of the year, freight shipments measured by the index were up 1.6 percent.
