MAVERICK BUMPS PAY 2 CENTS PER MILE
Maverick Transportation raised pay 2 cents per mile across the board, its third pay raise in less than two years.

It brings starting pay to 40 cents per mile for long-haul drivers and 38-39 cents per mile for regional drivers.

KOCH WINS SAFETY HONOR
Koch Trucking won the award for most-improved safety record from the Minnesota Trucking Association. Koch Safety Director John Hiscox received the MTA Safety Council’s Herb Ney Memorial Award.

IMMIGRANT NAMED TOP OWNER-OPERATOR
Justice Bilson, a native of the west African nation of Ghana, was named Transport America’s 2004 Owner-Operator of the Year.

Bilson ran a passenger van service in his homeland before moving to the United States a decade ago. He drove an airport shuttle in Miami for three years and has driven a big rig for seven years.

AWARDS & RECOGNITION
CONTRACT FREIGHTERS named James Freeman of Webb City, Mo., Contractor Driver of the Month. The contractor team award went to Roger Bolan and Ray Poland.

U.S. XPRESS honored driver Craig Donton, who saved a motorist and his dog from a burning vehicle, as its July Driver of the Month.
