Federal official outlines driver health concerns

Citing Center for Disease Control health statistics, Administrator of the Federal Motor Carrier Administration Anne Ferro expressed concern about the health of the American truck driver population.

“It was startling for me to learn commercial truck drivers’ life expectancy is 16 years less than the rest of us,” Ferro told attendees Nov. 8 at the International Conference on Commercial Driver Health and Wellness in Baltimore. “That means in eight years I would be expected to die if I were a commercial driver, at age 61. It’s a starling, frightening, and frankly, untenable figure to for us to carry forward.”

Ferro said several factors contribute to the problem with health being a major contributor.

Among the statistics Ferro highlighted:
• Only 10 percent of drivers exercise regularly compared to almost 60 percent for the general population,
• 54 percent of drivers smoke, compared to 21 percent for the general population,
• 50 percent of truckers are overweight or obese compared to 33 percent of the general population.

“We can’t sustain figures like that and expect individuals to be healthy contributors to their workplace and their families, and from my perspective, safe on the roadways,” Ferro said.

Ferro said 90 percent of the trucking industry is made up of small business owners, so the solutions to the health problem must be both for the good of the drivers as well as making financial sense.

“From our perspective, a healthy, focused productive person behind the wheel translates into a safer driver,” Ferro said. “It translates into better preventability. In terms of investments that companies make, FMCSA has to have a core role in it.”

These include FMCSA-mandated medical qualifications for commercial driver’s licenses as well as research and ongoing studies that look at driver mortality.

Among these are case control studies that look at driver demographics, medical conditions personality traits, working conditions and split sleep times.

The conference, which was organized by the Transportation Research Board of the National Academies and sponsored by FMCSA and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, continues through Nov. 10.

    After reading the article on Anne Ferro about Truckers 16 years less life expectency,among drivers.I’m glad someone finally starts realizing just what sacrifices the trucker makes every day to help keep our Nation running,but what i can’t understand is why has it taken so long for these people to understand problems that has plaqued the trucker for years.I am a retired trucker and have seen first hand all the discomforts,stressful conditions,and outright crazy laws that have taken advantage of the driver for years because of political and monetary gains.Many problems have plaqued the trucking Industry for years and lots of drivers lives ruined largely because of them.No other job that i know of do people have to be regulated and exposed to laws that do too little too late to help.,largely because they don’t either understand what a driver is confronted with or plain don’t care.If someone would start listening to the experienced driver,maybe some of these problems might be brought to lite and resolved.,instead of listening to politicians who know nothing about the conditions a trucker faces every day.

    It’s all for the bottom line for the companies! If they have a “body” to drive their truck & make a “buck”, that’s all they care about. What they need to do RIGHT NOW is not hire any more people that are overweight! Get together with all the truckstops & put in gyms and make it MANDATORY to exercise 3 times a week! If the current overweight drivers don’t lose the excess weight, they will be fired!
    It’s that simple! These lazy people go from buffet to buffet and lay in their sleeper watching TV. Get off their lazy [expletive deleted] of they’re out of a job. They’re putting everyone at risk, but again the companies DO NOT CARE!
