The Classic XL offers a 132-inch bumper-to-back-of-cab measurement and the Classic offers a 120-inch BBC design.

FREIGHTLINER UPGRADES ITS CLASSICS

Freightliner’s changes to its Classic and Classic XL trucks include a new chassis design currently in production that the company says will offer better ride and maneuverability.

The modern chassis design coupled with traditional styling gives these trucks “the best of both worlds,” says Mark Lampert, senior vice president sales and marketing.

The Classic XL offers a 132-inch bumper-to-back-of-cab measurement and the Classic offers a 120-inch BBC design. The new chassis design in both models makes for a smoother ride, quieter performance, improved maneuverability and a stronger frame.

Changes include a new leaf-and-a-half taper-leaf front suspension with a lower dynamic rate for bumpy roads; the Freightliner Airliner front air suspension is now available on the Classic XL. Rear air springs that are larger than before smooth the ride, and the air-ride cab mount is standard on the daycab.

Other ride and noise improvements include better sound damping on exhaust system, quieter clutch linkage, improved front cab and engine mounts, new rear cab air ride suspension and sound-dampening materials added to the cab floor and firewall.

NEW TRAILER PAINT SYSTEM

Transcraft’s new Valspar coating is “much more resistant to physical damage and chemical corrosion,” the company says. The trailer is first cleaned and treated with phosphate and a corrosion-retardant rinse, then coated with primer and finish coats before aluminum or wooden parts are installed. There is a five-year warranty on the finish.

SATELLITE RADIO ANTENNAS

TERK Technologies Corp. launched two Sirius satellite radio antennas for trucks and RVs. TERK offers two options for trucks: a mirror mount application, SIR4-MM, or a clip-mount application, SIR4-CLIP. These designs have proved they can stand up to severe weather conditions and survive high-vibration road conditions. Both antennas perform with dual-mode functionality, receiving simultaneous signals from satellite and terrestrial repeaters.

NO-POLISH WHEEL TREATMENT

Alcoa has introduced the new Dura-Bright wheel, made of forged aluminum. The wheels are protected by a treatment that penetrates the wheel, making polishing unnecessary. Brake dust, grime and oil residue wash off quickly and easily, according to Alcoa.

REEFER ROOF INSULATION

Industrial Coatings Alliance Group says its Super Therm insulating coating, when applied to the top of a refrigerated trailer, can reduce the unit’s fuel consumption approximately 30 percent vs. a multi-temp refrigerated unit with traditional aluminum roof. Super Therm, which contains four unique ceramics, has an insulation equivalent to R-19 (6 to 8 inches of fiberglass batt insulation). The non-conductive ceramic coating repels solar heat energy, a large source of thermal load for reefers on sunny days.

SELF-CLEANING BRAKE DRUM

Webb Wheel Products and Lynnfin Truck Technologies have created the Webb BTS (Brakes Turbines System) brake drums, which are engineered for use with Lynnfin’s BrakeTurbines. The drum’s shape causes a cooling, cleaning stream of air to flow between the drum and friction material. Hot air and brake dust are blown from the drum. The BTS Brake Drums have multiple ribs, which create more surface area for heat dissipation. Special vents in the drum allow heat to escape.

INDOOR PRESSURE WASHER

This self-contained unit features a 10-hp industrial Marathon Electric Motor with magnetic starter. At four gallons per minute at 4,200 psi, the motor is rated for continuous duty. An all-aluminum frame allows the unit to balance and move easily on its heavy-duty tires. Standard features include thermal overload protection for the motor and a sensor that puts the pump into bypass mode to prevent overheating.

DOUBLE DIAPHRAGM SPRING BRAKE

Haldex’s new double diaphragm spring brake technology incorporates the Haldex/Anchorlok Life Seal. The Life Seal’s design eliminates contamination by completely sealing the emergency brake chamber, which the company says produces superior performance and longer life of the spring brake. The Life Seal requires no vent holes, no air filters, no caging tool plug and no external breather tube. Rather, air is exhausted via a unique internal valve. It has an unconditional six-year, unlimited mileage warranty.

SUSPENSION FOR AUTO HAULERS

Hendrickson International has introduced an integrated suspension system designed for auto-hauling trailers and drop-frames. The Intraax AANLS 20K has patented tapered-beam technology, but is a short-beam suspension system with a capacity of 20,000 pounds.

The company says the suspension “delivers an air-ride package that is more than 120 pounds per axle lighter than comparable suspensions.” It is available in ride heights of 6/ to 12 inches. Either 16/-inch brakes or the 15-inch configuration – needed for 19/-inch tires – is available.
