Detention is a myth at most places, and a sad joke at the rest. the docks know they can get out of paying by refusing to put the in and out times on the bills
I put my time in and out on all bills and get detention time if needed. BUT what happens when they say 8am and it is actually 8PM for your appointment? And they only pay you $35 an hour (and Canadian at that). Not bad for sitting all day, EH? (lol) Let’s see…….instead of $50@hr it’s $35@hr….hmmm…..10 hours is $350 (FOR A WHOLE DAY WASTED when I could have got another load at around $1500) because the first 2 hours are FREE? I think CH Robinson needs to get the picture right or something!!!!!

90 Percent of the cause to “CHEAT” on logs is due to being tied up for long periods of time. Be it due to; Weather, Traffic situations (that are beyond our control), Breakdowns, etc..
The Largest by far is DOCK DETENTION. One of the ways to correct this problem is for it to hurt the pocket book. It would take complete cooperation from EVERY Carrier.
The possibility of this taking place is slim to none.
There are to many huge contracts between the LARGE movers in this Industry for there to be the ability to pressurize
this enough to make something happen.

Being an Independent Owner Operator (and Driver) It is astounding to me the lack of respect out there for my TIME.
Government limits it….
DOCKS waste it…
Customers squeeze it ….
Family misses it….

if they could take the product off the trucks and let me go. but i have to sit and watch them take a pallet off then stock it ,then the next one and so on.its the same time for them if they unload the truck all at once or one pallet at a time,but do we need to see how they run their wherehouse? just send me on my way,let me run my truck ! then maybe i will have enough time to make the next load
detention is a form of BAD MANEGEMENT. drivers have to pay the price. if at the shipper, its sitting all day then driving all night to make the appt. (don`t want to be late !) at the reciever u get to watching how u stock a wherehouse. government thinking is to restrick drivers, fine them , but dont ask WHY. lets dont fits it (they need money) if u bring the government in then they need a cut of the detention pay….(u watch n c)
If a carrier charges too much detention time the shipper will just use the next carrier or broker. It is sad to say a Government mandate is the only way.
I left a message on the Driver Appreciation article which addressed this issue.
Detention time paid is between the driver and the employer, just like paying for deadhead miles or paying for performing vehicle inspections, fueling, etc. When the employer tells the driver that detention time is not paid by the customer, so what? Paying the driver for detention time is a cost of doing business, just like allowing factory workers to get a paid break every couple hours or getting wash-up time at the end of a shift. Nothing is produced during those times, but it is still paid.
Carriers are their own worst enemy when it comes to retention. They simply fail to compensate adequately and have nobody to blame but themselves.
I wish there would be a set amount required by law across the board. I don’t like having to hassle with the broker on this matter. And there are now some brokers I refuse to haul for because they tried to rip me off on detention pay. The brokers are fond of saying that the amount is “up to the shipper” so whoever is responsible should go by set rules.
And just how do you, in your mighty wisdom, expect the O/O to “compensate adequately”? If you drive off after two hours you simply do not get any pay. So what is your exact solution, besides blaming someone?
Most guys dont get ANY money for time spent at the docks…this is why Most drivers are POOR.
We spend all our time NOT getting paid. On the road 7 days as company driver? Take home $500 less meals??? Yippee.
Most drivers have never made more than MEAGER pay.
Todays pay doesnt go very far either…INFLATION marches skyward…our Meager PAY is remaining constant and DECLINING at many companies. Big Fat waste of time.
I am an owner-operator with my own authority and we bill for detention after the first two hours, even if the rate confirmation sheet says they won’t pay for detention. My time is valuable and I bill for it. I charged a broker last week $75 per hour for detention and he said I couldn’t set my own “arbitrary” rate. I replied that it is my truck and my business and I can set my rate, just as he sets his own rates. He tried to pay $25 per hour, but ended up at $50 per hour.
The lesson we learned is to settle the detention issue and get a new rate confirmation while the freight is still on the truck. It is our only bargaining tool. It isn’t right that brokers think they are the only ones to set the rules.
