South Pole ice roads redux

January 11, 2010

 | by: Todd Dills

Sled offloadingIn my post from last week about the “Pole Dancing” blog following a South African national Antarctic research expedition and its peculiar freight-hauling methods, I mentioned the website of Caterpillar equipment distributor Barloworld Equipment, where the modified Antarctic Cat Challenger’s freight-transport abilities are chronicled. After the post went live, Barloworld media relations manager Alastair Currie was kind enough to forward some additional images from the expedition, and I thought I’d share the one included here, of the sled being offloaded from the expedition’s ship to the ice. Now that’s extreme intermodal!
