We don’t just throw darts when choosing story ideas for Truckers News.

In fact, most of the columns, articles and stories in the pages of this magazine reflect issues dear to the heart of American truckers. It’s the reason we conduct an annual survey. You give us an accurate profile, telling us exactly what you want to read about.

This year, 435 respondents answered questions concerning their jobs, equipment, interests, hobbies, families and economic decisions.

Here’s what we found out about Truckers News readers:

  • About 64 percent say they are company drivers, while 36 percent are owner-operators.
  • Of the 36 percent who say they are owner-operators, 87 percent say they’ve been company drivers.
  • 80 percent of respondents drive long haul.
  • The average one-way long haul is 936 miles.
  • The most common type of hauling is general freight (62 percent), followed by refrigerated (26 percent), hazmat (25 percent) and dry bulk (20 percent).
  • The average number of miles driven per year: 123,468 miles.
  • The average number of days spent at home out of 30 days: 9.2.
  • The average time spent at a truckstop: 3.6 hours.
  • The top three factors that determine which truckstop is chosen: cleanliness, easy access/parking and location.
  • More than 43 percent say they read the entire issue of Truckers News.
  • Nearly 66 percent of respondents are married and 93 percent are males between the ages of 35-54 years old.
  • More than 60 percent of respondents say they own a pickup or SUV, 60 percent own their own house or condo and 53 percent own more than one automobile.
