Driver shortage alarm, redux part 2: Bills in Ohio would subsidize ‘cheap labor’

Driver turnover rate at large fleets hits five-year low
The choppy freight environment in 2016 caused driver turnover rates to slow throughout the year, ATA says, reaching their lowest point since 2011. However, if freight picks up, turnover rates will climb again, ATA notes.

High driver turnover correlated with higher OOS, crash volumes and CSA scores
Data firm Vigillo found a close correlation between high turnover and generally more negative carrier numbers in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s compliance rating program. Also: FAST Act CSA requirements update — suggested CSA changes expected late Spring/early Summer.

And for too long, the situation for many drivers has been one in which “the rewards don’t match the requirements of the job,” said ATBS’ Richard DeForest at GATS.
