Spot van demand falls, rates follow; some reefer bright spots
There’s some good news in the Midwest for reefer operators migrating away from California, where demand has declined. Load volume from Los Angeles fell 10%, Sacramento was down 5%, and Ontario lost 3% last week. Market to watch: Grand Rapids reefers.

Spot rates soften in the last week
Load-posting volume slipped 16% during the week ending July 21, while the number of trucks available rose by 3%. The imbalance has been pushing national average spot rates lower, compared to June averages.

Freight recession? Not as long as volumes continue strong
Major van markets’ volumes regained all they lost during the July 4 holiday week, as talk of a freight recession arose from some industry quarters. Reefer shows signs of volume falls in the last week, but not the other major segments, DAT notes.

Trend to watch: Flatbed, as rates in all segments make modest gains
The national average flatbed load-to-truck ratio improved to end May at 13. That sounds good on its face, but keep in mind it was almost 90 a year ago. In flat and elsewhere, national average spot rates inched upward during the holiday-shortened week after Memorial Day.

Spot market: Signs of life for van, reefer rates as typical June uptick approaches?
Rates were higher on 54 of the top 100 van lanes compared to the previous week and the national average van load-to-truck ratio rose from 1.6 to 1.8. There are encouraging signs, but that’s still below expectations for the time of the year.

Volumes are high on the spot market, but rates are unmoved with an abundance of capacity
The weather is warming up and the freight is out there — in fact, van freight volumes for May are as high as they’ve ever been. But an abundance of capacity continued to keep spot truckload rates at less-than-stellar levels — and falling for vans compared to the April average — during the week ending May 19,

Truck posts up, spot rates flat in the last week
But not for flatbed, which gained 6 cents per mile as a national average rate. Spot volume fell 2 percent during the week ending April 7, while a 9 percent increase in available capacity in the form of trucks posted kept van and refrigerated rates from moving.

Spot freight ho-hum for a week-ending quarter, with high-demand bright spots for flats and reefers
Spot truckload freight posting volume was virtually unchanged during the week ending March 31, while the number of truck posts increased 5 percent, keeping van and reefer rates in check during the final week of March and Q1 2019.

A closer look at the freight-demand and planning app for owner-ops with Load One
In the sort of emergency-freight service that is the expedited trucking business, having information about where best to be for the next load is, to say the least, a difficult proposition. Load One’s “Ultimate Advantage” smartphone app, though, delivers relevant demand information to leased owner-ops, as Load One head John Elliott explains in this week’s Overdrive Radio podcast,

Spot market trend to watch: Potential upsides with the disruption of extreme cold
Last week’s demand indicators for truckers in the spot freight markets retained solid footing in slippery winter weather. This week’s extreme cold has slowed things down, but such situations have a tendency to drive rates up. Watch for the upside as thaws in the Midwest and elsewhere arrive.

Spot market: Rates tick up, demand’s flat, and fuel is falling
For the week ending Jan. 5, Capacity imbalance produced big gains in national average load-to-truck ratios for flatbed, though reefer and van were stable or unchanged. That could spell little movement in vans and reefers this week.
