The stories behind the music
How do ordinary full-time over-the-road drivers find time to develop their music skills? There’s no one right way, as the three finalists in our talent contest made clear while talking with radio host Eric Harley.
The three will compete at 5 p.m. this Friday for the winning spot in the Overdrive-Red Eye Radio Trucker Talent Search, sponsored by Delo. Their sing-off will be held at the Red Eye booth in the lobby of the Great American Trucking Show in Dallas. The winner will be featured in the October Overdrive.
For a sneak preview of these performers, check their video submissions. Sampson sings “Boys ‘Round Here” and Simpson sings “Eighteen Wheels and a Dozen Roses.” James sings “Detention (You Ordered It, You Unload It),” his rewritten version of Otis Reddings’ “Dock of the Bay.”
Those attending the Friday competition will also be treated to a performance by driver and recording artist Tony Justice, who will serve as emcee for the event. Here is the full schedule for performances and meet-and-greets involving Justice and others at the Red Eye lobby booth and inside booth during the show:
