Three finalists were named Aug. 26 in the “Transition Trucking: Driving for Excellence” recognition program that will give a Kenworth T680 76-inch sleeper to the winner.

Brad Bentley, president of the driver placement organization Fastport, announced them in a ceremony at the Great American Trucking Show in Dallas. Also announced was the signing of an agreement by 95 carriers and other trucking-related companies endorsing a program that assists employers in their support of employees who are members of the National Guard or a military reserve branch.

The finalists for the truck giveaway are:

  • Russell Hardy, of Trimac Transportation, who served with the U.S. Navy and U.S. Army.
  • Kevin Scott, of TMC Transportation, who served with the U.S. Army.
  • Troy Davidson, Werner Enterprises, who served with the U.S. Navy.

The winner of the Kenworth will be announced in December at the Pentagon.

The finalists were chosen from 10 finalists, who were presented at the ceremony. The other seven are: Robyn Hyde, Edward Cavanagh, Steven Cassaday, Christopher Fox, Jonathan Perez, Eli Tollinchi and Brandon Douglas.

The contest is a joint effort of the U.S Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s Hiring Our Heroes Program, Kenworth and Fastport. Its goal is to create immediate jobs for transitioning military personnel and help curb the trucking industry’s driver shortage.

The employer support document was tied to a partnership organization, Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve. With 95 trucking-related employers signing it, Bentley said it was “the largest statement of support signing in the 40-plus-year history of ESGR.”

Another highlight of the ceremony was a performance of the national anthem by Janine Stange, who completed her personal mission of singing the song in all 50 states.
