Greensboro is part of the North Carolina Triad, a three-city group including the towns of High Point, Winston-Salem and, of course, Greensboro. Located in western North Carolina, Greensboro was founded in 1808 and named for a Revolutionary War hero Nathanael Greene. The city was home to regional hubs for the U.S. Postal Service and Sears, as well as manufacturing facilities for Lorillard Tobacco and Western Electric. The city was also a key battleground during the civil rights movement in the 1960s, including a world famous sit-in staged by four local youths at the local Woolworth department store in 1960. It sparked one of the era’s chief civil disobedience tactics.
