Volvo Trucks says a petition alleging mechanical problems with more than 500 Volvo trucks has no merit, but it will cooperate with the federal agency investigating the complaint.
The Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association last year submitted the petition to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. OOIDA claims the trucks have steering problems, front U-bolt problems and sleeper berth fires.
Volvo spokesman Randy Bollinger says the company has a commitment to safety and was the first to install air bags in standard trucks and to make its cabs out of steel instead of aluminum.
“NHTSA routinely considers such petitions regardless of merit. While Volvo Trucks believes the petition is without merit, the company will continue to work with NHTSA and comply with all of their requests,” according to a press release.
If defects are found, there will be a vehicle recall and the manufacturer will take care of the problem. In the meantime, Bollinger said Volvo encourages customers with any problems to take their trucks to a Volvo dealership.
