Werner awarding safe drivers with new trucks

Overdrive Staff | November 26, 2013

Werner Enterprises recently introduced a three-tiered Million Mile Safe Driver Truck Program designed to recognize Werner drivers who have achieved safe driving milestones of 1, 2 or 3 million miles with new trucks and accessories.

Werner’s new program offers professional drivers the opportunity to order new trucks equipped with an APU with 110-volt service and assorted accessories available depending on the safe driving milestone achieved. Drivers with 1 million safe driving miles at Werner are eligible to order a new truck with a special decal package, while drivers with 2 or 3 million safe driving miles at Werner also can choose from accessory packages and premium upgrades.

New trucks ordered within this program will feature a light or dark blue exterior and remain with the driver until the equipment is removed from the fleet. Werner’s 2 and 3 million mile drivers are anticipated to receive their new trucks the first half of 2014, with 1 million mile drivers following soon after. Werner currently has approximately 570 professional drivers eligible for this program. Overall, more than 1,500 professional Werner drivers have achieved 1 million or more safe driving miles.

This article raises more questions than it answers,
    1. Are the company drivers simply picking options for their company truck?
    2. Is Werner giving these trucks to their drivers to own?

Trucks being replaced and the older hands at a company getting the new equipment is not news. That’s the way it works everywhere in the world. But I would like to give a shout out to the Overdrive staff writer for taking on this tough and hotly contested topic and getting this news out to the trucking public.
