The Volvo XE13 powertrain package has been named 2011’s Top Industry Innovation by the Truck Writers of North America. Named the most significant technical innovation, the package boosts fuel efficiency by 3 percent through a process referred to as downspeeding.
Features include a Volvo D13 engine with 425-455 horsepower rating and 1750 lb.-ft. of torque, Volvo I-Shift overdrive transmission with a 0.78:1 ratio, axle ratios of 2.64-2.69, and software that provides easy communication between Volvo’s powertrain components.
Operating in a 1050 rpm to 1500 rpm range, the package yields approximately 1.5 percent fuel efficiency improvement for every 100 rpm of downspeeding.
