Meet the maker of the Cubby Buddy truck toolbox

I’ve written about the toolbox before, which you may remember. Since then, says Debbie Zehrer, wife and business partner of owner-operator Jeff Zehrer (both pictured), the Cubby Buddy toolbox system has added models, with a total 10 to choose from. I had the great opportunity yesterday to talk with Jeff and Debbie. Leased to small fleet Hensley Inc. out of Osakis, Minn., the pair were reloading in Nashville en route to the Midway 
Truck Plaza on I-70 near Columbia, Missouri, for Terry Wooley’s show tomorrow, where they’ll be on hand to talk to interested drivers about the toolbox.
Find a vid in which Jeff shows off the toolbox prototype (the seventh one ever made, Debbie says) mounted in the cubbyhole in the side of his 2003 Freightliner Century. Since that prototype, the Zehrers have moved more than 1,000 units in less than a year of business, clear indication of the need for the convenient system.

It’s a good looking piece of equipment and I think the best application is the top-mount rather than the bottom. I’m not really sure about the practicality of having a permanently mounted toolbox in the sidebox of my truck. It could be a bit of an inconvenience having to walk back and forth from the worksite to the stationary box for needed tools. I feel that the price of $175 for a one drawer toolbox measuring 5 1/2′X 11″ X 20 1/4″ is a bit exorbitant also. Especially considering that you can pick up a 12″ X 11 1/2″ X 26″ steel 3 drawer box at most hardware stores for about $40, that can be placed in the side box and conveniently taken out and carried to the job area. I believe the Cubby Buddy is a good idea that needs just a few minor adjustments to make it more practical. Go get em Jeff and Debbie
I’ve been looking at and thinking about this ‘Cubby Buddy’ and I think a better or an additional application for this would be an easily detachable version so if need be, it can be transported to the immediate job location. Might be something to consider Jeff.
