In a surprising upset, businessman and Republican nominee Donald J. Trump has been elected as the country’s 45th president, beating out Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.

Trump, whose odds of winning the White House were thought to be long, took the key swing state of Florida and swept the predominantly Democratic “Rust Belt” states of Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin, propelling the Manhattan-based billionaire to victory.

Several Overdrive polls in recent months indicated truckers heavily favored Trump in the presidential race. Also, as noted in prior Overdrive reporting, trucking-based financial contributions to the two candidates heavily favored Trump.

In addition to Trump’s victory, Republicans also maintained their control of Congress. The House will remain firmly within Republican control. The party lost seats in the Senate but will maintain a slim majority.
