Convoy, shutdown effort dubbed ‘bust’ by national press

| October 11, 2013

The Ride for the Constitution protest convoy was a bust, having little effect on traffic or attention garnering from those on Capitol Hill, say national and local news reports.

As reported earlier by Overdriveabout 30 trucks showed up Friday, Oct. 11, to the Capital Beltway this morning as part of the planned convoy around Washington’s I-495. A much larger number of trucks was intended to overtake all three lanes and cause a traffic jam to get the attention of lawmakers.

Organizers had also talked of shutdowns or other trucker-related activity in other cities, but there appears to be no such reports corroborating anything happened.

Ride for the Constitution rolls, reports say 30 show up to convoy

The convoy and concurrent shutdown — also billed as a buy-nothing protest — had received much in the way of national attention from the likes of cable networks like Fox News and national print and online media like USA Today, CNN, Gawker, Politico and The Washington Post.

In a conversation with Fox News this week, one of the coordinators told Fox News 10,000 trucks would be involved in the protest.

However, as reported Thursday by Overdrive, the protest, convoy and shutdown had been losing support due to a lack of organization and lack of credibility of its organizers.

Politico published its story about the small turnout with the headline “Trucker protest a bust”. USA Today also takes a pointed approach — “Truckers ‘rolling protest’ hard to spot around capital”. However, USA Today in a separate story also blamed the poor weather in the Washington, D.C., area for the possible low turnout.

The Washington Post said no “major incidents” from the protest occurred, but also said rain played a part in heavy traffic on the Beltway. It quotes police from Virginia and Maryland as saying that around mid-morning, drivers participating in the convoy were traveling the same speed as other commuters and had splintered into smaller groups.

Fox News, too, recanted its report that 10,000 would show up, saying in its headline “Dozens, not thousands, show up for DC trucker protest”

As pictures from Twitter show, the protesters did make some attempts at blocking all four lanes of the Beltway — Click here to see Overdrive‘s coverage from this morning to see them.

However, according to tweets from the scene (like the one below), enforcers were on hand and giving those blocking the highway warnings for doing so.

bottom feeder, enjoy your government teet, and do what they TELL you!

  • USMC 69-75

He’s just a troll, sucking on the government teet. Whatever they say he’ll go along with. We call that a “SHEEPLE”

  • USMC 69-75

I was one of the 100 plus, we we’re loud, proud and they knew we were their, along with the vets…..they had their hands full, even though they denied we were there or as small as they say! Come Dec 14….it will be bigger and stronger, get ready. If your man enough to join in great…..if not I understand, short chain!

  • USMC 69-75

You keep getting your government control, to when they have you living in a box! Then you’ll sing a different tune!

  • USMC 69-75

Your fuel surcharge takes care of your fuel???? I get fuel surcharge and I get 100% of the revenue, but it sure doesn’t pay my fuel bill, just about 1/3 or less of it! But why do we have to make all these adjustments with over regulations, and fuel prices, ins rates etc.etc. when we should be able to run at decedent rates and make a good living.Rates are better than 10 years out of sync with cost of living. but if your a newbie….you wouldn’t know that!

  • USMC 69-75

Big truck tires, that hold up, keep your retreads, I’ll keep my truck in one piece. Besides that, it also depends on 22.5’s or 24.5’s so asking such a stupid question, shows what you know!

  • USMC 69-75

If you want to call that money? I was making better than that 10 years ago, but, now making a little better than 1.74 that with fuel and insurance and tires or just maintenance in general gone thru the roof…..your making money? Yeah right!

  • JJMclure

those fools now caused everyone to get level 1 inspections. Vote out the wankers instead of playing bully

  • Knowyourenemy

Thank you, Oscar! I couldn’t have said it better myself. A corporation is taking 30% of my load, Oil corporation is charging me more for a gallon diesel (it is a by product of gasoline), this truckin’ corporation won’t hire me because of my CSA scores, and this bank corporation is threatening to foreclose on my house.. Damn the government! Makes no sense..or better yet it is just plain nonsense.

You are exactly correct. I fail to ever understand how O/O’s say they are turning a profit at $1.70 a mile. I’m barely covering cost at $1.70

FMCSA under the guidance of Obama is the one driving the regulations on truckers, the same regulations that a driving truckers right out of business. Obama put Ferro into office. Her funds seem endless, her, she is not told to STOP new rules from rolling out until she has submitted reports backing up her last set of rules on July. The report was due in March. When 51 representatives sent a letter on September asking where it is, Anthony Foxx, another Obama appointee, backed her on the late report. We still don’t have it and probably never will. They are too busy working on the November release of new regs. So l, yeah, I am one of the lunatics who would like a whole lot less government control Let me make a living so the tax ppayers don’t have to put me on their list of dependents. Wake up…. Where is the money for the repairs to roads going?? Take Anne Ferro ‘s credit card aaway from her and see if we can figure out a way to cut some wasteful spending!

I went to that site they advertised to support the drivers. The radio show playing this morning was a white supremacist station. That’s how to insure failure, alienate a large percentage of supporters. I was very disappointed in this effort.

  • TexIsDumb

LOL, don’t feed the trolls. You probably got your blood pressure up for no reason. What’s funny about it, in the process of trying to insult your internet nemisis, you only made your self look like a damn fool. Also a stalker. Weirdo, looking for him on facebook. You are probably a really weird person.

What truckers need to realize is that we are made up of more than just radical racist Zeeda Andrews( ?) followers. We are made up of Democrats and Independents as well as Republicans and how can you ever get anything done as a group TO HELP TRUCKERS,when you piss off the other two thirds of the truckers. This was an attempt by a few radicals to further their vendetta against the President and anybody not like them. They were using truckers because they had no other group dumb enough to be their suckers.Come on truckers work together(even if it takes a strike) on things that affect all truckers, like H.O.S.rules and harassment by local D.O.T. cops and scale harassment, lumper fees and shipper receiver shake downs,I could go on,but the point is we should have real issues to address and not do something stupid like convoying to D.C to “impeach the president” and expel all muslims, and be made a fool of by someone like this lady and her bunch.

  • Tex Dyess

Wow. I’ve never had a troll name themselves after me before. I am honored and privileged. I mean…. Wow. I am speachless

C.B. radios: Gone. Big round tables in ‘truck stops': Gone. Shootin’ the breeze on the fuel island: Gone. Brotherhood: Gone. Respect: Gone. Hope for the trucking industry: Gone. Mark “Saddle Tramp” Haines: Gone. 1983-2011 After 27 years and 4,000,000 miles, I have had enough. The last time I was happy in the truck was in the early 90’s. It was just hard for a third generation trucker to hang it up, but the traffic and the regs made it a lot easier. I miss truckin’, not the road. There IS a difference! Ask anyone who trucked before the C.D.L came out.

  • USMC 69-75

    Robert,
In defense of Zeeda, at least she put up a fight. It was called “Ride for the Constitution” that effects everybody, from truckers to housewife. By trying to get smaller government, we also get them out of our trucks and business.
Granted you might not agree with her and her feelings, but if you believe in your country, and freedoms that are being peeled away….you should have been there!

  • USMC 69-75

I heard on the FM radio while in DC, they were covering it mile by mile…..that there is suppose to be a bigger one coast to coast I believe Dec 14th. Keep your eyes and ears open, if it’s true, participate!

  • USMC 69-75

What part of “Riding for the Constitution” don’t you get? It’s gotten bigger than just little owe me and my truck……it’s about taking our country back…….Vote! Yeah I vote all the time, but when you have to compete with the deceased and cartoon characters, voter fraud a muck, and nobody does anything, not to mention we need good candidates to vote for, not all these progressive both party idiopts……we need to take a stand, for trucking and our RIGHTS!
Sorry for spewing just pissed! On second thought…..No I’m Not!

  • USMC 69-75

At least somebody get it! Well said James!
    I salute you…. Semper Fi

  • USMC 69-75

There were a lot of drivers there in 4 wheels as well, but we weren’t counted????? I guess

  • http://huggyboo2u.wix.com/truckers-unite Earl Conlon

Unbelievable!! The trucker convoy was about STANDING UP FOR OUR CONSTITUTION! A statement to Gov to OBEY the constitution.. IF Gov. Obeyed the Constitution they would NOT be getting away with the laws, regulations etc that they are putting in place… However after reading the comments you folks turned this issue into how much we truckers are or are not making , cost of tires etc…when i said in the US NEWS we were going to circle the loop 3 lanes deep bumper to bumper. And when I said we would present evidence to law enforcement and DEMAND arrest of all who violate their Oath to office. WE HAD 3000+ truckers coming UNTIL ZEEDA Andrews got on TV and said NO we will not lock down the city and NO we will NOT demand arrest…once she said that ALL those truckers and supporters Backed out, They wanted to come to do something that would make a difference Not just drive around and blow horns..
However this Truck rally was suppose to happen in every state capitol, but the other people (NON truckers) involved did not focus on them they only focused on the DC part of this idea..So the results were NO Congress shaking in their boots, NO respect for the Truckers, No Gov Obeying the Constitution and NO ARREST..No results NOTHING CHANGED.. Thanks to those who were to afraid to more then blow their horns..
