Groups partner on shorepower project

Cascade Sierra Solutions and ShorePower Technologies have launched the Shorepower Truck Electrification Project which is making power pedestals available for long-haul truckers at 50 truck stop locations around the country.

The project is made possible by a $22.2 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy to study the viability and acceptance of truck stop electrification by the heavy trucking industry.

The project is seeking truck stops along the busiest transportation corridors that are interested in upgrading their current facilities to include electrified truck parking. The 50 locations are expected to be developed and available to truckers over the next 18 months. More than 1,200 truck parking spaces will be upgraded to provide electrical power for truck cabs and truck or trailer refrigeration units.

The STEP system power connections will be about $1 an hour with a small connection fee and will include cable TV access. Wireless Internet will be available for an additional fee.
To help ensure adequate numbers of vehicles are equipped to take advantage of the fuel savings offered by TSE facilities, a rebate program for idle reduction upgrade equipment is included in the project.

More than 5,000 vehicles will be awarded rebates for approximately 20 percent of the installed equipment cost. To qualify, upgrades must enable the vehicle operator to get electricity for cooling and/or heating the truck cab from the nation’s power grid.

Eligible EPA SmartWay verified technology equipment categories include auxiliary power units with shore power options, battery HVAC systems with shore power options, evaporative coolers and thermal storage systems.

In addition, TRUs on refrigerated trailers and Truck Cold Plate systems are eligible when they are equipped with electric standby options.

Rebates must be pre-authorized by Cascade Sierra Solutions. For more information and an on-line application click here or call (503) 289-3578.
