A True Gentleman

Asked to write a column in memory of our good friend and leader Pettus Randall, I wondered what words would be a fitting tribute. Then, going through my wallet, I found a poem by John Walter Wayland that I have carried with me for 27 years. Until I read it, I didn’t know why I had kept it for so long, but I quickly realized that it could have been written about Pettus:

“The true gentleman is the man whose conduct proceeds from good will and an acute sense of propriety, and whose self-control is equal to all emergencies
