High school junior Jasmine “Jazzy” Jordan is completing the final miles of her 9-month, 3,000-plus-mile run across the United States of a friend who died of cancer without health insurance. “Jazzy” plans to cross her finish line tomorrow, June 15, in New York City in front of ABC Studios in Times Square.
Her father Lee Jordan issued a call for truckers in the Northeast to join Jazzy on the home stretch, and particularly the last leg into Manhattan from Ft. Lee, N.J., on Tuesday. “If you’ve ever laced up a pair of tennis shoes and run a block or a mile or five or eight miles, then definitely come out for the last leg.” It’s an 8-mile leg, he added, and you can get in touch with the Jordans via Jazzy’s Facebook page and/or Lee Jordan at (813) 484-7415.

She began her run in California in September, and her father escorted her in a Ford F250. Daily updates appear on her Facebook fan page detailing her progress. She did it while keeping up with her homework and finishing the school year with honors.

Jazzy has endured foot injuries, heat, freezing rain, barking dogs and the North Carolina accident that totaled the pilot pickup truck her father, Lee, has driven behind her. Along the route, she has been honored by mayors, police and firefighters, and the White House. Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood praised her and her family in his blog, calling her a hero.
She has done it all to raise awareness of the St. Christopher Truckers Development and Relief Fund, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that provides financial assistance to professional truck drivers who have medical problems and who cannot otherwise afford health care. St. Christopher also conducts health research to benefit professional drivers and the trucking industry.
