Texas launches 24-hour permit system

The Texas Department of Transportation has reduced truckers’ permitting application time from hours to minutes through a new online system that allows applications 24/7.

TxDOT launched the Texas Permitting and Routing Optimization System, or TxPROS, Aug. 31, after working four years with stakeholders to develop a program that provides real-time, GIS-based mapping for routes and restrictions.

The department had used the Central Permitting System for 80 percent of applications, but permit staff still had to handle applications and route loads using paper maps with hand-written notations of current road and bridge restrictions. Texas issues more permits annually than any other state, TxDOT said.

Customers may still place orders by phone or fax, but permit specialists will use TxPROS to generate the permits. Cash permit offices will continue to operate at designated district offices and Travel Information Centers.
