If your New Year’s resolutions include becoming a safer, more professional and higher paid truck driver, then this could be your best year yet! The past 12 months have been a good year for truckers, and there’s every reason to believe that the good times will continue to roll into this year.
As the industry grows and prospers, the opportunities for people from different backgrounds to enter trucking increase. Today, for example, 15 percent of the nation’s 3.2-million truck drivers – about 480,000 – are Hispanic or Latino. Not surprising, considering that the 40 million Hispanics and Latinos in the United States make up the nation’s largest minority group. Those who have become truck drivers speak English well enough to obtain their CDL, fill out log books and navigate our nation’s highways, but many are more comfortable reading in their native language.
