I was unaware you could sauté onions in water or that salt substitutes taste even better than the white stuff I shake from the shaker. Who knew?
Apparently, not enough of us, say Pam Whitfield and Don Jacobson, also known as the Roadcookin’ Gang.
The husband-and-wife team performed their hilarious, informative and possibly lifesaving nutrition show at our booth during the Great West Truck Show in Las Vegas in June, and they’ve planned encore performances for the Great American Trucking Show in Dallas, August 21-23.
Pam is the nutritionist featured each month in Truckers News’ Fit for the Road series of health stories. Don is the author of four health-conscious cookbooks, his “One Pan Gourmet” series. Their entertaining overview of nutrition for truckers offers a common-sense approach to eating healthier.
Truckers participated in a lively discussion about food portions, reading food labels, healthy snacking and making good meal choices at truckstops. Jack Kelsh, Truckers News’ April Health Hero of the Month from Billings, Mont., stopped by to tell his amazing story about how he went from an unhealthy 365 pounds to the athletic, fit, 190-pound person he is today. A drawing was held at the end of the presentation, and lucky truckers won Crock Pots and Burton Stoves to Go.
Because of the positive feedback, we’re proud to sponsor the Roadcookin’ Gang at the GATS show, with more great prizes, samples and goodie bags for participants.
In addition to hearing Don and Pam, there’s plenty to do at GATS: free concerts (Marty Stuart and Nitty Gritty Dirt Band), gorgeous show trucks and rooms full of the latest and greatest trucking products and services. We’ll also have our Mardi Gras Beads giveaway again with a daily drawing for a $1,000 cash prize. Sign up at the Truckers News booth, then collect beads from vendors to qualify for the drawing.
On a sidenote: The city of Dallas recently passed an anti-idling ordinance with fines up to $500 that will be in effect during the show for those parking onsite. (There are exceptions for drivers taking their 10-hour mandatory rest, traffic delays and stop lights). Still, the convention center truck parking area is available and remains the most convenient location for truckers to park their rigs and enjoy the show.
We hope to see you there. And please stop by the Truckers News booth and say howdy!
