Health walk highlights driver fitness

HealthwalkThe owner-operators of the Trucking Solutions Group  have taken an active role in promoting the health and wellness of drivers around the nation for three years now, since their first 61+ Health Awareness Walk at the Great American Trucking Show. The walk, named for the average life expectancy age for truck drivers, a number the TSG hopes to help boost, drew well upward of 30 participants early Friday, Aug. 24, morning for a 1.5-mile lap around the perimeter of the show floor.

Among the participants was TA Petro Truck Service Technical Trainer (and regular guest on the Dave Nemo SiriusXM show) Homer Hogg — TA sponsored the event. Hogg, talking to the walkers just before embarking, described his long and recently culminated effort to lose more than 100 pounds, emphasizing the small steps he took along the way toward the greater goal. “Instead of eating a cookie, I’ll eat cheese instead,” for instance, he said. “When I sit down to eat, I use this rule thumb: If it can fit in the palm of my hand, it’s a meal.”

Exercise, of course, is the primary lynchpin in his efforts, he said. His brief talk held lessons for anyone looking to lose weight. As did Hogg in his effort, take “a moment to sit and stop and think about, really, the rest of my life.”
