Truckers whose weekend travels including heading east through Phoenix should plan ahead to avoid a closure of I-10 Eastbound as part of a construction project.
The interstate will be closed between 9 p.m. Friday, March 22, and 8 p.m. Saturday, March 23, between 67th and 51st avenues. The closure will allow crews to remove a 90-foot-long steel beam above I-10 that temporarily supported the future HOV flyover bridge on the South Mountain Freeway interchange.
The Arizona Department of Transportation suggests drivers use Loop 101 west of I-17 to get around the closure. The eastbound I-10 on-ramps at 91st, 83rd, 79th and 75th avenues will also be closed to help reduce backups.
The 22-mile South Mountain Freeway is scheduled to be completed in 2020 and will provide an alternative to I-10 through downtown Phoenix.
