Military veterans in Illinois now have an easier path to obtaining a commercial driver’s license with the signing of a new law that allows certain veterans to waive the CDL knowledge written test.
In order to qualify for the waiver, CDL applicants have to meet the following qualifications:
- Be a current resident of Illinois
- Be a current or former member of the military
- Been regularly employed in a military position that required the operation of large trucks within one year of applying
- Received formal military training in the operation of a vehicle similar to what the applicant expects to operate
- Complete a knowledge test waiver form, certifying their qualification for the waiver.
“I am pleased to help make it easier for our military veterans to find employment based on their previous military driving service,” said Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White. “These are individuals who have given so much of themselves for the greater good of this nation. There is no greater honor than serving your country, and we should do our part to help these heroes find jobs suitable to their skills and experiences. That’s what this new law does.”
