Massive Ford recall over trailer brakes issue hits Super Duty pickups

Ford Motor Company is recalling more than 4 million vehicles, including Super Duty pickup trucks, for an issue that could result in the loss of trailer brake and turn signal lights, and possible loss of brake function, according to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration documents.

The recall includes approximately 4,381,878 vehicles, including:

  • 2021-‘26 F-150
  • 2022-‘26 F-250 Super Duty (SD)
  • 2022-‘26 F-350 SD
  • 2022-‘26 F-450 SD
  • 2022-‘26 F-550 SD
  • 2022-‘26 Maverick
  • 2024-‘26 Ranger
  • 2023-‘26 F-600 SD
  • 2022-‘27 Lincoln Navigator
  • 2022-‘27 Expedition
  • 2026 E-Transit

In the affected vehicles, when towing a trailer, the integrated trailer module (ITRM) may lose communication with the vehicle, possibly causing a loss of brake and turn signal lights, or a loss of brake function. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 108, " Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment."

The integrated trailer module software will be updated by a dealer, or through an over-the-air (OTA) update, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed March 17. Owners can contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 with recall number 26C10. NHTSA’s recall number is 26V-104.

A separate recall affecting nearly 16,000 model-year 2025 Ford Transit cargo vans includes a “Do Not Drive” warning for the affected vehicles. In these vans, the brake pedal may disconnect from the brake booster pushrod, causing a loss of brake function. Dealers will inspect and repair the brake booster assembly as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were expected to be mailed March 2. Owners can contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436- 7332 with recall number 26C07. NHTSA’s recall number is 26V-090.
