Real Women in Trucking names 2020 Queens of the Road
Three women have been named Queens of the Road by the Real Women in Trucking. A ceremony will be held Aug. 29 in Las Vegas. In other news: A trucker was named a Highway Angel for stopping to help a motorcyclist who hit a deer. A new diesel option for expediters in cargo vans.

Driver recognized for helping young woman whose car caught fire
Robert Digrazia was on his way to pick up freight in Bradenton, Florida, when he saw a car stopped in the road with small flames coming from under the driver’s door. He pulled up next to the car and saw the driver, a young woman possibly in her late teens, was still inside.

Trucker who helped resuscitate colleague named Highway Angel
Clyde Nelson was at his fleet’s terminal walking across the parking lot when he noticed a woman lying on the grass across the way. As he approached, he was shocked to find her unconscious and her eyes rolled back in her head. Nelson began performing CPR while another person called 911.

Driver recognized for helping at the scene of serious two-vehicle crash
On Aug. 9, Robert Wheeler was heading south on Highway 135 when he saw an SUV pulling out of a strip mall parking lot. Without stopping, the SUV pulled out of the entrance and into the path of an oncoming commercial van. Wheeler said the van had no time to react and t-boned the SUV.

Kentucky-based trucker named Highway Angel for helping at scene of fiery, fatal crash
Brian Smith drove up on a head-on collision involving two tractor-trailers and a pickup truck in which four people died. He grabbed his two chain, allowing the pickup to be pulled away from the flames of the two semis. A 13-year-old girl was Life Flighted away from the scene.

Trucker named Highway Angel for stopping to help fellow driver hit by passing vehicle at roadside
Terry Whittington learned the man was a driver for Roehl Transport who had pulled over to check his equipment when he was struck by a U-Haul vehicle pulling a car. The U-Haul had drifted toward the right shoulder when it struck the driver. His legs were badly crushed and was in shock and losing a lot of blood.

Trucker named Highway Angel for swerving into ditch to avoid head-on collision
Burlington, Vermont-based truck driver Jim Kurent, on Jan. 19, was on a two-lane highway in Vermont when a Subaru going the opposite direction crossed the center line right in front of him. Kurent was able to swerve out of the way to avoid hitting the car head-on.

Kevin Phillips had to make a quick maneuver to avoid hitting the car, then watched as the car slid off the road into a grassy area, hit a culvert and roll four times, narrowly missing a telephone pole.

Trucker awarded for helping after witnessing car accident
Justin Rockcastle, of Wittmann, Arizona, was driving in rain and hail along I-70 near Thompson Springs, Utah, when he saw an SUV in his mirror that hydroplaned and hit his drive tires, sending the car into the center median where it rolled multiple times.

Husband-wife team named Highway Angels for saving motorist from burning vehicle
The Zimmermans worked with two other men to pull the man free, then carried him away from the vehicle. He told them he had a gun and ammunition in the car, so they moved as quickly as they could to put more distance between them and the burning car. Shortly after, the car exploded.
