Want a sure-fire way to put more money in your pocket by controlling your fuel expenses. Slow down — for every mile per hour you drive over 60, you reduce your fuel economy by one-tenth of a gallon per mile. Also, keep your rig in top running order. Preventative maintenance can hurt your fuel efficiency. Lastly, stick to your routes. Most owner operators log 6 to 12 percent of annual miles that are unnecessary.
